Brandon Lawson: The Mystery of a 911 Call and an 11-Year Search

On the night of August 8, 2013, 26-year-old Brandon Lawson left his home in San Angelo, Texas, after an argument with his longtime girlfriend, Ladessa Lofton. He told his family he was heading toward his father’s house, but somewhere along the way, his plans changed. Within just a few hours, Brandon would make a series of frantic phone calls, abandon his pickup truck along a rural highway, and seemingly vanish without a trace.

For more than a decade, his disappearance became one of the most debated missing person cases in America.

A Night That Took a Strange Turn

Brandon had been working exhausting hours in the Texas oil fields while helping raise four young children. According to his family, he had also recently relapsed and was using methamphetamine, something they believe contributed to his behavior in the days leading up to his disappearance.

After leaving home around 10:45 p.m., Brandon eventually called his brother, Kyle, explaining that he had run out of gas near Highway 277 outside Bronte, Texas. During the call, Brandon made alarming statements, claiming that “three guys” were chasing him. At approximately 12:50 a.m., Brandon dialed 911.

The 54-second call has been analyzed countless times by investigators, journalists, podcasters, and internet sleuths. Although the audio is difficult to understand, Brandon can be heard telling the dispatcher that he needed the police, that his truck had run out of gas, and that people were chasing him through a field.

Just twenty minutes later, a Coke County deputy arrived to find Brandon’s truck abandoned and partially blocking the roadway.

Brandon was gone.

His wallet, keys, and cell phone were missing, suggesting he had left the truck on foot expecting to return. But despite extensive searches involving helicopters, cadaver dogs, infrared imaging, and volunteers, no trace of Brandon was ever found.

Theories Surrounding His Disappearance

With so little physical evidence available, investigators were forced to consider several possibilities.

One theory suggested Brandon voluntarily disappeared. He had an active felony warrant related to a previous drug conviction, had recently begun the process of cashing out his 401(k), and had argued with Ladessa shortly before leaving home.

Another theory focused on methamphetamine-induced psychosis. Family members acknowledged Brandon had recently relapsed, and many investigators believe paranoia and hallucinations may explain his frantic phone calls and strange behavior that night.

Others have long believed Brandon encountered someone in the isolated Texas countryside and became the victim of foul play. Some listeners claim to hear additional voices or even possible gunshots on the 911 recording, though those interpretations remain highly disputed.

Without evidence, none of the theories could be confirmed.

A Break Nearly Nine Years Later

Everything changed on February 4, 2022.

An independent missing persons advocacy group conducted another search of the area where Brandon’s truck had been abandoned. During the search, volunteers discovered clothing that Brandon’s fiancée immediately recognized as what he had been wearing the night he disappeared.

Authorities quickly secured the area and expanded the search.

Roughly 400 yards away, investigators recovered partial human remains, including a skull cap and other skeletal elements scattered across dense brush and rugged private hunting property.

The location helped explain why Brandon had remained undiscovered for so many years. Thick vegetation, cactus, erosion, and animal activity had concealed and scattered the remains across the landscape.

The Role of Forensic DNA

Although investigators strongly suspected the remains belonged to Brandon, confirming his identity proved far from simple.

After nearly nine years exposed to the harsh West Texas environment, the remains had significantly deteriorated. Obtaining a usable DNA profile became an enormous forensic challenge.

To aid in the identification, Brandon’s father submitted a DNA sample for comparison.

Just days before Christmas in 2024, the laboratory confirmed an approximately 82% genetic match, officially identifying the remains as Brandon Lawson.

On Christmas Day, Brandon’s family publicly announced the news they had waited more than eleven years to hear.

While they had finally found Brandon, forensic science could not answer one final question.

Because only skeletal remains were recovered, investigators were unable to determine an official cause or manner of death.

A Mystery That Still Remains

In July 2025, Brandon’s remains were finally released to his family. After more than eleven years of searching, they were finally able to bring him home.

His ashes were shared among his parents and four children, and a public memorial service gave family, friends, and supporters an opportunity to honor his life.
