In 2014, two 12-year-old girls, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier were charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Police said the girls plotted this attack for 6 months.
On the day of the attempted murder, Morgan and Anissa lured their friend and fellow 12-year-old, Payton Leutner into the Wisconsin woods and stabbed her 19 times with a kitchen knife.
When the girls were arrested, they told police a chilling story. Morgan and Anissa said the attack was “kill or be killed”. They said they attacked their friend in order to please the fictional character Slender Man.
The case raised many questions regarding mental health, juveniles facing adult charges, and children’s access to the internet. After several years in the judicial system, Morgan and Anissa pled guilty in adult court and were sentenced to several decades in a mental hospital.
