On November 17, 1978, four employees at a Burger Chef restaurant in Speedway, Indiana went missing during their closing shift. When the manger and the police arrived at the fast-food chain, they noticed that the back door was left unlocked and $581 in cash was missing. Thinking the four employees stole the money and went out for a joy ride, no formal investigation was launched.
The employees were 20-year old, assistant manager Jayne Friedt, 16-year old Daniel Davis, 17-year old Ruth Ellen Shelton, and 16-year old Mark Flemmonds.
The following day, the Burger Chef employees were still missing. Other employees arrived at the restaurant and cleaned up any possible evidence that could have been left inside the night before. That same day, the bodies of Jayne, Daniel, Ruth Ellen, and Mark were found about 30 minutes away from Speedway.
Over the years, a few people have emerged as possible suspects in the case. However, over 4 decades later, the murders have remained unsolved.
