On May 29, 2019, eyewitnesses watched as a SUV drove off a 200-foot cliff on the winding Hana Highway on the island of Maui. The SUV was seen accelerating towards the cliff with no signs of breaking.
Moments before the crash, people heard and saw the car’s occupants fighting and pulling each other’s hair.
When first responders were airlifted down to the crash site, they discovered two identical twin sisters inside the SUV, Alexandria and Anastasia Duval. The twin who was the driver, Alexandria, survived the crash. However, the twin who was the passenger, Anastasia, died.
Early in the investigation into what caused the crash, investigators believed one twin intentionally drove the SUV off the cliff. Alexandria was arrested and charged with second degree murder the death of her twin sister, Anastasia.
A judge found her not guilty of the murder, but many still believe this was a botched murder-suicide attempt.
