The Chicago Tylenol murders occurred between September and October 1982 throughout the greater Chicago metropolitan area. During this time, seven people were poisoned and killed by Tylenol-branded acetaminophen capsules that had been laced with potassium cyanide. Many others were killed from “copycat” killers who were inspired by the Tylenol murders of 1982.

The deaths prompted over 31 million Tylenol products to be recalled from store shelves. Johnson & Johnson, the maker of Tylenol, suffered a tremendous financial loss as a result of the poisonings.

The 1982 Tylenol murders changed the way pharmaceutical companies were required to label and seal their products to prevent this from happening again.

To this day, the Chicago Tylenol murders remain unsolved.
