The Unsolved Murders of the Dardeen Family: A Crime That Still Haunts Southern Illinois
On November 18, 1987, the quiet farming community of Ina, Illinois became the scene of one of the most horrific family murders in American history. What investigators discovered inside a modest trailer home—and at a second crime scene just miles away—would leave even seasoned law enforcement officers shaken.
Nearly four decades later, the murders of Keith and Elaine Dardeen, their three-year-old son Peter, and their newborn daughter Casey remain unsolved.
A Family Looking Toward the Future
Keith and Elaine Dardeen had built what many described as a quiet, ordinary life in southern Illinois. Keith worked at a local treatment plant, while Elaine was pregnant with the couple’s second child and stayed home caring for their young son, Peter.
The family had recently decided to move, listing their trailer for sale and planning to relocate closer to Elaine’s parents. Friends later said the couple had become increasingly uneasy about crime in the area after several violent incidents had occurred in nearby communities.
Sadly, they never had the opportunity to leave.
A Horrific Discovery
When Keith failed to report to work on the morning of November 18, coworkers became concerned. Their search led to a devastating discovery.
Keith’s body was found in a remote field several miles from the family’s trailer. Not long afterward, investigators entered the Dardeen home, where they found an unimaginable crime scene.
Elaine, Peter, and the couple’s newborn daughter, Casey, had all been murdered inside the trailer.
The brutality of the crime stunned investigators and quickly made national headlines.
The Forensic Investigation
The murders presented investigators with an enormous challenge.
Evidence indicated that Keith had been abducted from the trailer before being taken to a separate location where he was killed. Investigators were forced to reconstruct a timeline spanning multiple crime scenes while trying to determine whether the killer had specifically targeted the family or whether they had been victims of a random act of violence.
As with many high-profile cases, limited information released to the public created fertile ground for rumors and speculation. Conflicting reports about certain aspects of the investigation only fueled fear throughout southern Illinois, leading many residents to believe a serial killer—or even a cult—was operating in the area.
Despite extensive investigative efforts, no physical evidence has ever definitively identified the person responsible.
Did Serial Killer Tommy Lynn Sells Do It?
Years later, convicted serial killer Tommy Lynn Sells claimed responsibility for the murders.
Over time, however, Sells offered multiple and often contradictory versions of what happened that night. In one account, he claimed Keith invited him over for dinner. In another, he said he randomly targeted the family after noticing their trailer was for sale.
Some investigators believed Sells knew details that had never been made public, leading them to consider him a credible suspect.
Others remained unconvinced.
Many of the details Sells provided had already appeared in media reports, and when investigators questioned him about evidence that had been intentionally withheld from the public, his answers often conflicted with the known forensic evidence.
Adding to the skepticism, friends and family of the Dardeens found several of Sells’ claims difficult to believe, particularly his assertion that Keith invited a complete stranger into the family’s home despite growing concerns about crime in the area.
Ultimately, prosecutors concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge Sells before his execution in Texas in 2014.
An Enduring Mystery
The Dardeen family murders continue to stand as one of Illinois’ most disturbing unsolved cases.
Who targeted this young family? Why was Keith taken to a second location? Was the killer someone the family knew, a passing stranger, or was Tommy Lynn Sells telling the truth after all?
Those questions remain unanswered.
Nearly forty years later, the investigation has never officially been closed, and the person responsible has never been brought to justice.
